Living a Life Motivated by Purpose
Purpose isn’t the easiest thing to define or nail down. I’m not talking about the purpose of life, either. I want to talk about the purpose for living life, the reason we get up in the morning and stay up late at night and still keep on going. The thing that keeps us motivated and going that is a vital part of living. It takes all of the doing and focuses it into something that feels more like being, like really living.
Over the next few weeks, we’re going to cover several steps that you can implement on your own to help you unlock your inner purpose and start the journey to fulfillment. Each step is designed for you to work on over the course of a full week. I hope you’ll join us as we cover this series of posts.
So, is this you:
- You have no idea what your “purpose” is; you’re just trying to make it through the day and pay your bills and maybe have some fun in between all of that.
- You feel like there has to be more to life than this.
- You’re not sure what needs to change, but something needs to happen because you’re just not happy.
If that’s you, then you are in the right place. We can work on getting you where you need to be in life to be satisfied and happy.
Let’s cut the fluff and get right to it.
Week #1: Get to the heart of it.
Cut the crap. You’re not reading this because you’re happy with where you are in life. Quit making excuses about why you can’t do something about it right now. This right here is your very first step. This is how you do something about your situation.
This is the week where you need to be brutally honest with yourself.
Do you think you don’t deserve to be happy? Do you feel like everyone else’s happiness is more important? Do you feel unworthy, or are you overwhelmed?
Changing how you live your life isn’t easy, and discovering your inner purpose is going to take hard work. Period. Change isn’t easy and knowing where to begin can be painful, to say the least. This is your chance, right now, to lay it all out there. Be honest with yourself. What’s been holding you back? Put it on paper. Write it down. You’ll be amazed how much less power it has once it’s on paper.
When you’re writing, make sure you are taking ownership for your own actions. If you feel like someone has been holding you back, think about it again from a different perspective. Is that person holding you back, or are you surrendering your power to that person and allowing him or her to hold you back? Have you decided to prioritize someone else’s needs above your own? If yes, then who’s been holding you back, really?
Once you’ve got it on paper, let it sit for a day or two. Make sure that’s all that has been holding you back. Keep it in the back of your mind as you go about your business and see if anything else pops up. If it does, write it down! Quick! Before that moment of clarity disappears.
Now what?
Week #2: Listen.
Stop for a moment, step back, be still and listen. What is your heart telling you? What’s your gut say?
Intuition isn’t just for mothers, with messages about their children. Intuition is that gut feeling we get about something, someone, or a situation, and we should listen. My intuition has never steered me wrong, and I bet yours will be helpful as well.
You have what you need to be satisfied and fulfilled, but it’s locked away inside of you. The process to unlocking these hidden qualities will require you to spend time in reflection. It will mean unplugging from the world every once in a while, to stop doing and start being more regularly.
If you aren’t sure what your intuition is telling you, it’s time to listen for it. If you do know what your intuition is telling you but you’ve been ignoring the message, then it’s time to start trusting yourself. You know yourself better than anyone else ever could. You are the best person to determine what it is you need in life to be happy and satisfied.
Set some time aside throughout the week to be still and quiet. Shut off the electronics and reflect on your situation in life. Pay close attention to your gut or heart’s reaction when thinking about different things in life. You’ll start to discover the message you’ve been missing.
